"What does it cost to make a candle?" is one of the most common questions we get from first-time buyers, and it's also one of the hardest to answer honestly in a single number. A tealight and a hand-poured three-wick jar candle in a heavy glass vessel can differ in factory price by a factor of ten or more, and even two candles that look nearly identical on a product page can have meaningfully different costs depending on wax type, fragrance concentration, vessel sourcing and order volume. Rather than give you a number that might be wrong for your product, this guide breaks down the actual cost components so you can understand what's driving your quote — and ask better questions of any supplier who gives you a price.
Wax: the base material cost
Wax is usually the largest single raw material cost in a container candle, and the type you choose has a direct effect on price. Paraffin wax is generally the least expensive option and remains widely used for its strong fragrance throw and consistent burn. Soy wax, made from soybean oil, typically costs more than paraffin and is popular with brands marketing a plant-based or "natural" positioning, though "soy wax" alone doesn't guarantee a clean-burning or non-toxic product — that depends on the full formulation. Coconut wax and coconut-soy blends sit at the premium end of the common options, prized for a slower, cleaner burn and better fragrance retention, but the raw material cost is noticeably higher than either paraffin or pure soy. Beeswax, used less often for private label runs because of cost and supply variability, is at the top of the price range. Vessel or jar cost: often the biggest line item
For container candles, the vessel is frequently the single largest cost component — sometimes larger than the wax and fragrance combined, particularly for smaller candle sizes where the vessel represents a bigger share of total material per unit. A basic stock glass jar in a common size is inexpensive at volume; a custom-colored, custom-shaped, or embossed glass vessel requiring its own mold or tooling costs substantially more, both in unit price and in upfront tooling investment. Ceramic and ceramic ware with a printed or glazed finish typically costs more than equivalent glass. Concrete and specialty finishes sit higher still, both because of material cost and because production runs are slower. Fragrance oil load: a real trade-off between cost and strength
Fragrance oil is typically added to wax as a percentage of total weight, commonly somewhere between about 6% and 12% depending on the wax type, the fragrance house's recommended load rate for that specific scent, and how strong a scent throw the brand wants. A higher fragrance load costs more per unit — fragrance oil is priced by weight and is one of the more expensive inputs — but also gives a stronger cold throw (scent when unlit) and hot throw (scent when burning), which matters a great deal to how a customer experiences the product. Some brands try to cut fragrance load to save cost and end up with a candle that barely smells like anything once lit, which usually costs them more in returns and poor reviews than the fragrance oil they saved. A supplier who can't tell you the exact fragrance load percentage they're quoting at is not giving you a complete quote, even if the headline unit price looks attractive.
Wick selection
Wick cost per unit is small relative to wax, vessel and fragrance, but wick type and sizing affect both burn quality and safety, and getting it wrong undermines everything else in the candle. Cotton, wood and paper-core wicks all have different burn characteristics and different costs, and the correct wick size depends on the vessel diameter and wax type — a wick that's too small won't create a full melt pool and a wick that's too large can cause excessive smoking or overheating. A serious manufacturer wick-tests each new vessel and wax combination rather than reusing the same wick size across every product, and that testing time is a small but real part of what you're paying for in development.
Labeling, packaging and secondary packaging
Beyond the candle itself, cost is added by the label (printed adhesive label versus a more expensive embossed or foil-stamped design), any lid or closure, and secondary packaging — a simple kraft box, a rigid gift box, printed tissue, or a full unboxing experience with inserts. For markets like the US, UK and EU, labeling also has to meet destination-specific regulatory content requirements around ingredient disclosure, warnings and burn instructions, which is a compliance cost as much as a design one — our guides on US candle compliance and EU/UK labeling rules cover this in detail. Packaging cost scales with complexity far more than with the candle's own material cost, so a modest candle in elaborate gift packaging can end up costing more per unit than a premium candle in simple packaging.
How order volume changes per-unit price
Almost every cost component above has a volume curve. Raw materials get cheaper per unit at higher purchase quantities because the factory itself buys wax, fragrance and vessels in bulk and passes some of that saving through. Tooling costs for custom vessels or embossed labels are fixed regardless of order size, so they represent a much smaller share of unit price on a 10,000-unit order than a 500-unit order. Labor and production line setup time is also amortized across the run, so a larger batch reduces the per-unit share of that fixed setup cost. This is why the same specification can legitimately be quoted at very different unit prices depending on quantity, and why comparing a quote at 300 units against a quote at 5,000 units tells you almost nothing about which supplier is more competitive.
Illustrative ranges — and why we're deliberately vague
We're intentionally not publishing a single price table here, because a table that looks precise but is disconnected from your actual specification does buyers more harm than good — it either sets an unrealistic expectation or gets treated as a firm number when it was never meant to be one. What we can say directionally: a simple stock-jar soy candle with a moderate fragrance load and a basic printed label will land toward the lower end of a private label program's cost range; a custom-vessel, higher fragrance-load, premium-packaged candle can cost several times more per unit even at the same volume; and MOQ, vessel customization and fragrance load typically move the price more than wax type alone. Any number we or another supplier gives you before seeing your full specification should be treated as a rough planning figure, not a quote you can build a retail price around.
Why a quote without a full spec isn't meaningful
A trustworthy candle quote requires, at minimum: candle size and weight, wax type, fragrance name and load percentage, vessel material and whether it's stock or custom, wick type, label and packaging details, and order quantity. Leave any one of these open and the number you get back is a guess dressed up as a quote — which is exactly how buyers end up shocked when a "confirmed" price changes once production actually starts. If a supplier quotes you instantly on a vague brief like "scented candle, nice jar, 500 pieces," that speed is a warning sign, not a convenience.
