Activewear and technical fabric sourcing from India: what buyers should know.

India's performance fabric capability is real and growing — but sourcing leggings, compression wear and technical layers takes a different playbook than sourcing a basic tee.

Activewear has become one of the fastest-growing categories for private label brands, and India's textile industry has been investing seriously in performance fabric capability to meet that demand — moisture-wicking polyester and poly-blend knits, four-way stretch fabrics for leggings and compression wear, and technical finishes for quick-dry and anti-odor claims. That capability is real, but activewear is not just "a garment made from a stretchier fabric." It's a different sourcing conversation, with different technical questions, different construction requirements, and a few realistic expectations that first-time buyers in this category benefit from knowing before they place an order.

What "technical fabric" actually means in a sourcing brief

Where a basic cotton tee brief can get away with specifying fiber content and GSM, an activewear brief needs to go further. Moisture-wicking performance depends on fiber blend and yarn construction (fine-denier polyester with a wicking finish behaves very differently from a cotton-poly blend), and buyers should specify whether they need genuine moisture management performance or simply a soft-hand poly-blend that looks and feels like activewear without the functional claim. Four-way stretch — meaning the fabric stretches and recovers in both the horizontal and vertical direction — is essential for leggings, sports bras and compression garments, and is typically achieved with spandex or elastane content in the 8–20% range depending on the compression level required. Compression garments in particular need a fabric with strong recovery (the ability to snap back to shape after stretching), since a fabric that stretches well but recovers poorly will bag out after a handful of wears and washes.

Seam construction matters more in activewear than almost any other garment category

A standard lockstitch seam that works fine on a woven shirt is often the wrong choice for stretch activewear, because it doesn't stretch with the fabric and can pop or pucker under movement. Activewear typically requires flatlock or coverstitch seams, which are built to stretch with the fabric and lie flat against the skin to reduce chafing — an important detail for leggings, sports bras and compression tops where seam placement sits directly against skin during movement. Buyers should specify seam type in their tech pack rather than assuming a factory will default to the right construction, and should ask specifically whether the manufacturer has experience sewing on stretch-fabric machinery (flatlock and coverstitch machines are a different investment than a standard single-needle line), since a factory that primarily produces woven shirts or basics may not have this equipment or the operator experience to run it well.

Testing that matters more for activewear than for basics

Colorfastness — whether color holds up under washing, rubbing (crocking) and perspiration — is worth testing on any garment, but it matters more on activewear because these garments are washed more frequently and are worn directly against sweat. Pilling resistance is another area where activewear fabrics, especially poly-blend knits, can behave differently from cotton, and a fabric that pills after a handful of washes is a common source of customer complaints in this category. Buyers entering activewear for the first time should ask their sourcing partner to include colorfastness and pilling checks as part of pre-production fabric testing, not just visual inspection at final QC — catching a fabric issue before bulk cutting is far cheaper than discovering it after 2,000 units are sewn. Sizing and fit consistency deserve extra attention

Stretch garments are less forgiving of small sizing inconsistencies than woven basics, because the fit is close to the body and a compression garment that's slightly off-spec is far more noticeable to the wearer than a slightly loose t-shirt. Grading (how a pattern scales across sizes) for stretch garments should account for the fabric's stretch percentage, and it's worth reviewing a fit sample on a live model, not just a mannequin, before approving bulk production — movement and stretch recovery are hard to evaluate on a static form.

Realistic expectations for a first activewear order

Buyers new to this category should expect a slightly longer sampling process than for basic garments, since fabric sourcing for technical performance often takes an extra round to match the exact hand-feel, weight and stretch percentage specified, and construction needs a fit sample reviewed properly rather than approved on sight. It's also worth being realistic that not every general garment factory is a strong fit for activewear — matching your order to a manufacturer with genuine stretch-fabric experience matters more here than in most other apparel categories, which is a core part of what a sourcing partner should be doing on your behalf rather than simply forwarding your brief to whichever factory responds first.

Many brands entering activewear are already running private label programs in other categories, and the cost structure follows similar logic to other garments — fabric, cut-make-trim labor, trims and decoration all apply, though technical fabric typically carries a price premium over basic cotton knits. Trims and hardware are different in activewear too

Elastic waistbands, drawcords, silicone grippers on the inside hem of leggings, laser-cut (rather than sewn) hems for a seamless look, and bonded or heat-sealed logo patches are all common in activewear but uncommon in basic apparel, and not every factory has the equipment or experience to execute them well. Laser cutting and bonding in particular require specific machinery investment, so if your design calls for a bonded seam or a laser-cut edge, confirm early that your manufacturer actually has this capability in-house rather than assuming it's standard. Elastic quality also matters more here than buyers expect — a waistband elastic that loses recovery after repeated stretching and washing is a common source of returns in activewear, so specifying elastic quality and asking about wash-test performance is worth the extra question.

Labeling and care instructions carry more weight for performance claims

If your product makes a functional claim — moisture-wicking, four-way stretch, compression-fit — your care label and any hang tag copy should be consistent with how the garment actually performs and should reflect care instructions that preserve that performance, since certain fabric finishes and elastane content can degrade with incorrect washing or drying. This is also a good discipline for avoiding overstated marketing claims: if you haven't tested the fabric's actual wicking or compression performance against a defined standard, it's safer to describe the garment in terms of its construction (moisture-wicking poly blend, four-way stretch fabric) than to make an unverified performance guarantee.

What to bring to your first conversation with a supplier

A clear statement of the functional claim you want to make (moisture-wicking, compression, quick-dry), a target fabric weight and stretch percentage if you know it, any reference garments you can point to, and your realistic first-order volume. If you don't have technical fabric expertise in-house, say so — a sourcing partner experienced in this category should be able to help translate a general brief ("leggings that don't sag") into a workable fabric and construction specification rather than expecting you to arrive with mill-level detail already defined. Bring a reference garment if you have one, even from a different brand, since a physical reference resolves ambiguity about hand-feel, weight and stretch far faster than a written description alone, and gives both you and the factory a shared benchmark to sample against.

A category where the right manufacturer match matters more than usual

Activewear sits at the intersection of fabric technology, garment construction and fit precision in a way that basic apparel simply doesn't, which is why matching your order to a manufacturer with genuine, demonstrated experience in this category is worth prioritizing over choosing the first factory that quotes a competitive price. A factory that primarily produces woven shirts, formalwear or basics may be perfectly capable in its own category and still be a poor fit for stretch fabric construction — this isn't a reflection of overall quality, just specialization, and it's exactly the kind of mismatch a sourcing partner should be catching before you commit a deposit rather than discovering it in a flawed sample.
