Cotton vs blended fabrics: a sourcing guide for private label apparel buyers.

100% cotton and cotton-poly blends aren't simply "premium vs. budget" — each has real, different strengths, and choosing the right one is a specification decision, not a marketing one.

"Should our tee be 100% cotton or a cotton-poly blend?" is one of the most common questions we get from brands developing a new garment, and it's a genuinely important one — fabric composition affects how the garment feels, how it wears over time, how it should be cared for, what it costs, and how it can be marketed. There isn't a universally "better" answer; the right choice depends on the product, the price point, and what you're promising your customer. This guide walks through the real differences between cotton and the most common blends, why India is a strong sourcing base for both, and how to specify composition clearly enough that your factory can't misinterpret it.

100% cotton: the appeal and the trade-offs

Cotton is breathable, soft against the skin, and absorbs moisture well, which is why it remains the default expectation for basics like t-shirts, underwear and many casualwear categories. It also takes dye well, producing rich, consistent color, and it has a natural, premium hand-feel that many buyers associate with quality. The trade-offs are real too: 100% cotton garments shrink more than blended fabrics if not pre-shrunk or compacted properly, wrinkle more easily, and can lose shape faster with repeated washing and stretching, particularly in lower-quality cotton or looser knit constructions. Cotton is also generally more expensive than polyester on a like-for-like basis, and cotton pricing can be more exposed to agricultural supply fluctuations than synthetic fiber pricing.

Cotton-polyester blends: what they actually solve

The most common blend in casualwear is cotton-polyester, typically in ratios like 60/40 or 50/50 cotton-to-poly, though ratios vary by product. Adding polyester to a cotton fabric improves shrink resistance and shape retention, reduces wrinkling, and generally lowers the overall fabric cost since polyester is cheaper to produce than cotton. It also tends to dry faster and hold color reasonably well over repeated washes. The trade-off is a fabric that's typically less breathable than 100% cotton and can feel less "natural" against the skin — a meaningful consideration for brands whose customers specifically value or expect a cotton feel. Blends are also worth watching from a labeling and marketing standpoint: a brand that markets a product as feeling "just like cotton" while it's actually a 50/50 blend is on thinner ground with informed customers than one that's upfront about the blend and its benefits (durability, easy care, lower price point).

Other common blends worth knowing

Cotton-spandex or cotton-elastane blends add a small percentage of stretch fiber, usually in the low single digits, to give woven or knit cotton garments recovery and comfort stretch without changing the overall look and feel much — common in fitted tees, chinos and denim. Cotton-modal and cotton-viscose blends add a softer, more fluid drape and a slight sheen, often used in more premium casualwear where a softer hand-feel is desired. Tri-blends (cotton-polyester-rayon, commonly around a third each) are popular in fashion basics for their exceptionally soft, slightly heathered look and drape, though they typically cost more than a straightforward cotton-poly blend and can be more delicate in construction. Each of these serves a different design intent, and the right choice comes down to what feel, drape and durability profile suits your specific product.

Durability, cost and sustainability positioning — how they actually compare

On pure durability against pilling and shape loss, a well-made cotton-poly blend often outperforms 100% cotton, particularly in garments that see frequent washing. On cost, blends are generally cheaper than 100% cotton because of polyester's lower input cost, though the gap varies with cotton market pricing and blend ratio. On sustainability positioning, this is genuinely more nuanced than marketing often suggests: cotton is a natural, biodegradable fiber but is water- and land-intensive to grow conventionally, while polyester is synthetic and petroleum-derived but can be produced from recycled sources (rPET) and generally has a lower water footprint in production. Brands making sustainability claims should be precise about what they mean — "natural fiber" and "lower environmental footprint" are not automatically the same claim, and conflating them is a common and avoidable mistake. If sustainability messaging matters to your brand, specify certified organic cotton or recycled polyester explicitly in your fabric sourcing brief rather than assuming a generic blend covers the claim.

India's advantage as a cotton-sourcing base

India is one of the world's largest cotton producers and has a genuinely deep, vertically integrated textile industry — cotton is grown domestically at scale, and India has extensive spinning and weaving capacity to turn that raw cotton into finished fabric within the country, rather than relying heavily on imported fiber. This domestic supply chain is a real, structural advantage for buyers sourcing cotton and cotton-blend garments from India: it generally supports more competitive cotton fabric pricing and a wide range of readily available cotton fabric qualities and weights compared with markets that import most of their cotton fiber or fabric. How to specify fabric composition unambiguously in a purchase order

Vague composition language is a common source of disputes after goods arrive. State the exact fiber percentages you require (e.g., "60% cotton / 40% polyester," not "cotton blend"), and specify whether you require testing to verify composition on received fabric, since blend ratios can vary from mill claims without verification. State the fabric construction (single jersey, interlock, french terry, etc.) and target GSM range, since two fabrics with identical fiber content can feel and perform very differently depending on construction and weight. If care requirements matter to your customer promise (machine washable, tumble dry safe, no shrinkage beyond a stated tolerance), state that expectation explicitly rather than assuming it follows automatically from fiber content — a heavier or unfinished cotton fabric can still shrink meaningfully even when labeled "pre-shrunk," and this is worth confirming through a wash test on your approved bulk fabric before production, not just on the original sample fabric.

How fabric composition affects garment performance beyond the swatch

It's worth remembering that composition interacts with construction — a 100% cotton fabric knitted as a loose, lightweight jersey behaves very differently from the same fiber content knitted as a dense, heavier interlock, and the same is true for blends. A buyer choosing between fabrics purely on the fiber percentage listed on a spec sheet, without also reviewing GSM, knit structure and finishing, is only getting part of the picture. This is one of the reasons a physical swatch review matters more than a written specification alone: hand-feel, drape and stretch recovery are hard to judge from numbers on a page, and two fabrics with identical composition and GSM can still feel noticeably different depending on yarn quality and finishing treatment.

Yarn quality specifically is worth understanding as its own variable, separate from fiber content. Cotton yarn is often described by a count number that relates to yarn fineness, and finer, higher-count yarns generally produce a smoother, more refined fabric surface, while coarser yarns produce a heavier, more textured fabric — both can be appropriate depending on the product, but the difference matters for how a garment is positioned and priced. Two cotton tees at the same GSM can still feel meaningfully different in hand if one uses combed, higher-count yarn and the other uses carded, coarser yarn, and this distinction is often what separates a fabric that feels premium from one that feels basic, independent of fiber content alone. If a specific hand-feel is central to your product's positioning, it's worth asking your supplier directly about yarn quality rather than assuming GSM and fiber percentage tell the whole story.

Getting this right before you commit to bulk production

Fabric composition decisions are much cheaper to get right at the sourcing stage than to fix after a bulk order ships. Request a physical fabric swatch and, ideally, a garment sample in your final fabric choice before approving bulk cutting, and if your product's positioning depends on a specific fiber claim, build in a lab test on your bulk fabric roll rather than relying solely on the mill's stated composition.
